Conferring the Title of Honorary Alderman

Conferring the Title of Honorary Alderman

The Council is invited to resolve as follows:-

That this Council records the eminent services

rendered to the Council by

John David O’Brien

distinguished past Member of the Council.

That the title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough

of Wigan be accordingly conferred on:

John David O’Brien for his valuable service to the council and the community at large.

Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 requires that a resolution to confer the title of Honorary Alderman must be passed by not less than two-thirds of the Members voting upon it.

Minutes:

In recognition of service, the Council may confer the title of Honorary Alderman upon a past Elected Member of the Council, for services rendered to the Council. This was an entirely honorary position, bringing no special rights, but it was intended to reflect the esteem of the wider community.

If approved, the former Elected Member joined a distinguished list of senior Local Government figures, rewarded in such a way for their long and exceptional services.

It was moved by Councillor K Anderson and seconded by Councillor C Rigby, that the title of Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Wigan, be conferred upon Mr John David O’Brien.

Members paid tribute to the former Elected Member, and on behalf of the Council, the Mayor thanked Mr O’Brien for the valuable service that he had given to the Council and to the community at large.

Resolved: The Council:-

(1)  places on record its thanks for the eminent services rendered to the Council by Mr John David O’Brien, distinguished past Elected Member of the Council; and

(2)  agrees that the title of Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Wigan, is accordingly conferred upon Mr John David O’Brien.
